Bat and Moth

Bat and Moth

Summary:  Bat & Moth is a blindfolded listening game similar to Marco Polo, where the "bat" uses sound to locate and catch the "moth."

Ages: From 8 and older

Recommended Number of Players: 6 or more

Equipment:
One blindfold

Set Up:
No prior set-up required. This game is best played outdoors or in a large open area with plenty of space.

How to Play:
Have all players form a circle. Choose one player to be the Bat and bring them to the center of the circle. Blindfold the Bat, making sure they truly cannot see. Next, silently choose another player from the circle to be the Moth — do not reveal this to the Bat. All remaining players are Trees and must stand completely still throughout the game.

The Bat's goal is to locate and tag the Moth using only sound. To do this, the Bat calls out "Echo!" The Moth must respond "Prey!" and the Trees each respond "Tree!" The Bat may move freely within the circle while listening for the Moth. The Moth may also move within the circle to avoid being caught.

When the Bat successfully tags the Moth, the Moth becomes the new Bat, a new Moth is chosen from the circle, and the former Bat rejoins the circle as a Tree. Continue play until everyone has had a turn in both roles.

Winner:
This is a non-competitive game — the fun is in the playing! However, if you'd like a competitive version, award one point to the Bat for each successful catch and see who tags the Moth in the fewest tries.

Safety Notes:
Before starting, confirm that all players are comfortable being blindfolded. Players who wear glasses should have them safely removed and held by a designated person during their turn as the Bat.
