Short History Lesson

My favorite explanation of why we hold showers is that it may have been derived from the custom in Victorian times for the presents to be put inside a parasol, which when opened would "shower" the bride-to-be with gifts.

In the USA, baby showers became popularized after WWII. They were usually given after the birth when the baby was presented to the family. Sometimes these presentations were combined with other religious ceremonies such as a baptism. It was also a way of keeping the new mother company while she and her newborn were in confinement, often for a month. It was also traditionally a party for the first child only, the idea being that mostly practical gifts would be given and would last through the birth of the next children as well.

One of the biggest change to the baby shower is that it is now given about a month to two before the due date.

A key element is the “showering” of gifts on mother and baby-to-be. For this reason, baby showers etiquette says that showers should be hosted by a female friend of the family, and not by herself, her own mother or mother-in-law: that would make the expectation of gifts seem greedy.

Baby Shower Games are a large part of the party. I am sure you will find many games here that will delight your guests!

Party Tip: If you are the host of a baby shower, consider how much fun it would be to obatin little rubber ducks and have them floating in the punch bowl. Yellow isn't your only option either; they make pink and blue ducks too!
